September has seen the PCI Data Security Standard updated to version 1.1. A full copy of the new standard along with a separate document providing a summary of changes can be found via the link below. This update to the standard coincides with the launch of the PCI Data Security Standards Council whose mission is to enhance payment account data security by fostering broad adoption of the PCI Security Standards. The organisation has been founded by American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB, MasterCard Worldwide, and Visa International.

At Gartner’s IT Security Summit held in London on 18th September, Amrit Williams previewed the ‘2006 Cyberthreats Hype Cycle’. During the presentation Gartner urged organisations to incorporate penetration testing into vulnerability management processes and investigate more-aggressive intrusion detection and protection approaches that move beyond threat-signature-based approaches. It also advised companies to evaluate managed security services when internal capabilities are not available or sufficient for advanced security activities.
